Submissions

The Copper Nickel accepts submissions of unpublished short fiction, poetry, essays, prose poems, and other written experiments. We are open to anything, but we highly recommend reading an issue of Copper Nickel before submitting.

We are now accepting unsolicited submissions through our Submission Manager system ONLY. Submissions received through e-mail after September 1, 2009, will be returned without review.

  • Please limit submissions to five poems or a single piece of prose.
  • Submissions will not be accepted by snail mail or by email.
  • And, please, please, please, indicate if yours is a simultaneous submission. We do consider simultaneous submissions, but we would be grateful for at least 6 weeks to make a proper review.
  • We are not accepting submissions of visual art at this time.

We respond to submissions as quickly as possible. During February, March, April, May, September, October, and November, we can usually respond in 6-8 weeks. Submissions received in January, June, July, August, and December, may wait up to 12 weeks before reply.

We are currently fielding an average of 3,000 - 4,000 poems a year and over 1,000 pieces of prose. We are able, at present, to publish less than 3% of the work we receive.

The Fine Print

Copper Nickel requests first North American Serial Rights for print publication, electronic serial rights for online publications, and permission to submit published work for syndication in appropriate venues or to nominate published work for appropriate prizes and awards (such as the Pushcart Prize), all of which is negotiated in a contract following acceptance of a work. All other rights remain with or revert to the author upon publication.

Copper Nickel pays contributors in copies and in subscriptions and works to draw new readers to contributors' work, both within our pages and without. We are unable to offer financial remuneration beyond this at this point.

Help a journal out
